portrait series

A project focused on utilizing storytelling as a tool for expanding access to community and connections for emerging BIPOC professionals in creative fields and entrepreneurial pursuits.

Only 34% of Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) work in creative occupations in New York City, despite NYC being comprised of a 68% BIPOC population.

  • BIPOC communities make up nearly 40% of the U.S. population, yet barely comprise half of that percentage in contemporary art (22%), fashion (22%), and film (19%). In totality, there is work to do to increase BIPOC representation and support within creative fields.

  • Emerging professionals pursuing creative industries identify networking and mentorship as significant positive influencers on their career pathway, yet they often find reaching out to seasoned professionals time consuming, intimidating, and inaccessible, which influences the ability to build a strong foundational network in creative fields.

  • The (story)tellers portrait series provides meaningful yet informal collective building opportunities for BIPOC creatives and entrepreneurs to share their narrative and expand their network/support system by way of visual and oral storytelling mediums.
